BioHmm. I'm different, but I realize saying that I'm different doesn't make me different at all. There are at least 1 billion people on the planet, or perhaps just this website that would qualify themselves as different, which, in essence, doesn't make me different at all-it makes me like the rest of the 1 billion self-identified different people.
Ok, I will no longer use the word different to describe me. Quirky, is a better word.
Okay, how about this. In accordance with the social norms of my family and my distinction as an African American, I am different. Meaning, within my circle of people, I'm not like the rest of them. This is inherently obvious because my genetics are different from that of my sister or my best friend. So, I guess to clarify, I am dissimilar to the rest of my inner circle in ways excluding the biological.
I'm funky, and unique, and I take a certain amount of pride from that... And oh do I have a lot of pride.
Pride in the fact that I'm the only one in my family who even thought about, let alone executing the idea of dating outside my race, despite hours of rabblerousing from my mother, father, and grandmother.
Pride in the fact that I am the only girl I know who knows who Gordon Freeman is and why he's so damned awesome.
I am the only girl who will get the joke--the cake is a lie-- and laugh about it.
The only black girl who walks around the Life Sciences Building of my college institution with a set of keys to a lab.
The only black girl who can speak decent Japanese and can tell you why exactly the Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi was crap.
The only black girl I know of who adores Gackt, and hates rap with an all consuming passion.
The only black girl with Daft Punk, David Brubeck, and Asian Kung-Fu Generation on the same playlist.
The only black girl who claims the opening theme to Hellsing as her theme music.
The only black girl I know who finds /b/ on 4-chan actually funny.
The only black warlock (currently lvl 18) on the Baelgun server of WoW. House of Pain ftw!
I live, and love, and laugh a little differently than the people around me and I consider that as what makes me special.
